On June 9, 2009 on the threshold of the 4th Moscow International Public Book festival the winners of the “Unicorn and Lion” translation award were announced at the British Embassy in Moscow.
Established in 2006 in cooperation with Foreign Literature Magazine, the British Embassy, Book Review Newspaper and Translator’s Guild, the Unicorn and Lion award is the only award in Russia celebrating best translations of the contemporary British and Irish literature.
This year the main prize is participation in the international seminar on contemporary British Literature in July 2009 in Cambridge and in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2009.
The jury members had a very difficult task to choose the best translations of plays and novels by such prominent authors like Mark Ravenhill, Martin McDonagh, Caryl Churchill, Peter Ackroyd, Ali Smith, Nicholas Drayson and Jonathan Coe.
Finally two winners were announced: Inna Stam for the translation of the novel The Lambs of London by Peter Ackroyd and Tatiana Oskolkova for the translation of the play Top girls by Caryl Churchill.

The Unicorn and Lion award next year will most likely be given in “prose” and “poetry” nominations and will showcase the best translations of 2010!
