Level Crossings

Level Crossing Unit is responsible for the:

• development and management of a State level crossing database.
• ongoing risk assessment of all level crossings in South Australia.
• risk assessment of new level crossing proposals.
• prioritisation and implementation of level crossing risk mitigation strategies.
• management and coordination of the Level Crossing Safety Upgrade Program.
• ongoing reviews to ensure consistent and effective implementation and maintenance of level crossing signage, pavement marking and sighting distances for all level crossings.

State Level Crossing Strategy Advisory Committee

The State Level Crossing Strategy Advisory Committee (SLCSAC) was re-formed in January 2003 following the fatal Park Terrace, Salisbury collision between a bus and a freight train in October 2002.

The role of the SLCSAC is to improve the coordination efforts between agencies and stakeholders in improving level crossing safety, to provide a stronger focus on improving the risk profile of all level crossings in South Australia, and to act as an advisory body to the Level Crossing Unit. The SLCSAC oversees the delivery of the Level Crossing Safety Upgrade Program that has $2.865 million allocated in 2005/06.

The SLCSAC is chaired by the Executive Director, Transport Services Division and meets approximately six-weekly. Membership comprises representatives from across the road and rail segments of the transport industry including:

• Australian Rail Track Corporation
• Australian Railroad Group
• TransAdelaide
• Pacific National
• Australian Rail Tram and Bus Industry Union
• Royal Automobile Association
• Local Government Association
• SA Police
• Council of Historic Railways and Tramways of SA
• Public Transport Division

• Park Terrace, Bowden
• Leader Street, Goodwood
• Victoria Street, Goodwood
• Marion Road, Plympton
• Barretts Road, Panorama
• Brighton Parade, Blackwood
• Hawker Street, Bowden
• Port Road, Woodville
• Morphett Road, Morphettville
• Wenzel Road, Balhannah

Level Crossing Incident Reporting

We need your help to maintain a safe user environment at level crossings. It is extremely difficult to monitor road user behaviour at each and every public road level crossing within the state. You can help us by reporting incidents.

If you notice the following incidents at Level Crossings:

• vehicles queuing over a crossing, driving around or under boom gates.
• failing to stop on a flashing red signal.
• failing to stop at a level crossing stop sign.
• pedestrians ignoring level crossing warning devices or failing to use appropriate pedestrian mazes.
• damage or vandalism to signs or level crossing protection equipment.
