Welcome to the University of Florida Health Science Center, which consists of six colleges that work in close collaboration with Shands HealthCare. Although the HSC and Shands are distinct legal entities, we work together as UF&Shands, the University of Florida Academic Health Center. Our mission is to promote health through outstanding patient care, innovative and rigorous education in the health professions and biomedical sciences, and high-impact research across the spectrum of basic, translational and clinical investigation.

May 20th will mark the second anniversary of the publication of the Strategic Plan for UF&Shands, the University of Florida Academic Health Center. We can be very proud that this plan, called “Forward Together,” has spurred tremendous progress. In the Jan. 11th issue of OTSP, our collective accomplishments were highlighted by college deans, research center and institute directors, and hospital CEOs. In the Jan. 20th issue, I summarized the strategic basis for our momentum, and the key factors responsible for maintaining our drive.

Liver transplant program reactivation plans underway
Dear UF&Shands faculty, residents, staff and students:
We are proud of the excellent reputation our transplant teams have earned and their rich history of medical firsts and milestones in patient care and service.
We are pleased to announce plans to reactivate our adult and pediatric liver transplant programs at Shands any day now. This positive news comes following the appointment of Jeffrey Fair, M.D., the UF College of Medicine department of surgery chief of abdominal transplantation, who joined us last month to lead our outstanding transplant team.
