Musicology PhD Student Wins Prestigious German Chancellor Fellowship
The Graduate College (17 April 2012) — Reneé Gordon Holley, Illinois Ph.D. candidate in Musicology, has received the prestigious German Chancellor Fellowship for Future Leaders. No more than ten awards are given to fellows in the United States annually.
Awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the fellowship provides an opportunity to young leaders from a broad range of professional and academic backgrounds who have completed at least a bachelor’s degree, have gained work experience and have shown outstanding leadership potential in their careers. The Foundation aims to foster future leaders who are able to act as goodwill ambassadors between Germany and their respective home countries by providing one year of support for a project of merit. more

– the University of Illinois’ art exhibition space in downtown
Champaign – won’t involve wine and little cheese cubes speared on
colorful toothpicks. Instead, patrons will nosh on milk and cookies,
then skip over a bridge and watch TV in a fort.
The exhibition comprises a single installation by Samantha Persons, a first-year graduate student in the School of Art and Design, a unit in the U. of I. College of Fine and Applied Arts. more
New Director of the Marching Illini is an Illinois Alumnus
Barry Houser, alum – acting director of bands and director of the Panther Marching & Basketball Bands at Eastern Illinois University – will take the baton from Pete Griffin, who stepped down in May.
Houser was appointed Friday as visiting assistant director of bands and conductor of athletic bands, a two-year appointment. more

Illinois Theatre Professor Directs Play by Alan Alda
The New York Times (May 9) -- Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Allison are among the actors coming together on June 1 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City to participate in a reading of a new play by Alan Alda about Marie Curie. The play was performed at a workshop in Seattle under the direction of U. of I. theater professor Daniel Sullivan.
