The ELTons, sponsored by Cambridge ESOL, are the only international awards that recognise and celebrate innovation in the field of English language teaching.

The ELTons 2013 shortlists have been announced!
Below are the nominees, selected by a panel of expert judges using the Delphi technique, who are in the running to win a prestigious ELTon award at the ceremony on 22 May 2013 in London. Here are the 2013 nominees in full:

This year innovative ELT products and services have been entered for one of the following awards:

Excellence in course innovation 

Complete courses in any, or a variety of, media – books, websites, CD Roms, audio, teachers’ book.

Innovation in learner resources 

Any product or service aimed at learners.

Innovation in teacher resources 

Any product or service aimed at teachers, including training, education or development.

Digital innovation 

Any product or service that uses technology innovatively. This can be for learners or teachers of English.

Local innovation 

Learner or teacher solutions developed at a local, national or regional level to meet a specific local need and within a specific local context.

The Macmillan Education Award for Innovative Writing 

Sponsored by Macmillan Education, this award is open to aspiring ELT authors who have not yet published any of their work. The winner receives £1,000 and the opportunity to publish their work.

The Lifetime Achievement Award 

In any profession there are a number of outstanding leaders and innovators who change the landscape of the profession and have a lasting impact on the way work is carried out. Each year we award the British Council Lifetime Achievement Award to one of those outstanding leaders in English Language Teaching, to celebrate their long career in ELT and to express the profession’s gratitude for their contribution to how we work and how we help our students and teachers in their aspirations. Past winners of the award have included Alan Maley, Ingrid Fairbairn and Brian Abbs.

Previous ELTons

2011

The 2011 awards ceremony took place on 23rd February in central London. Jeremy Harmer was the guest presenter for the evening. Sponsored by Cambridge ESOL, awards were given in four categories; The UK Award for Innovation, The Cambridge ESOL International Award for Innovation, The Macmillan Education Award for Innovative Writing and, new for 2011, The Lifetime Achievement Award for English Language Teaching.

2010

The ceremony, sponsored by Cambridge ESOL, took place on 3 March in London, marking the eighth year of the prestigious awards. Ken Wilson was the guest presenter.

2009

The  ELTons 2009 awards ceremony, sponsored by Cambridge ESOL, took place on 4 March in London, marking the seventh year of the prestigious awards. The winners in the UK and International categories were nominated by an expert panel of judges. Lord Neil Kinnock, Chairman of the British Council at that time, presented the awards.

2008

The  ELTons 2008 awards ceremony took place at the Delfina studios near London Bridge on 7th March. The guest presenter for the evening was the world-famous linguist, David Crystal.

2007

Twelve products were shortlisted from a wide range of UK-based entries. In addition, two international awards, offered by the English Language Teaching Contacts Scheme (ELTeCS), were given for teachers working across borders on English language projects. Susan Bassnett, of the University of Warwick was the guest presenter at the ceremony which took place at the Delfina gallery.

About the ELTons

The ELTons, sponsored by Cambridge ESOL, are the only international awards that recognise and celebrate innovation in English language teaching (ELT). They reward educational resources that help English language learners and teachers to achieve their goals.

Applications are submitted online by the end of November and they are judged by an independent panel of ELT experts, using the Delphi Technique.

The nominees are announced in March and the winners are announced at the awards ceremony in central London in May.
