Community Development
The Community Development Program focuses on working with communities selected to host new state prisons. Program staff has worked to build effective relationships and partnerships with local officials and host communities since the selection of multiple sites in 1997. Community Development works internally with other department programs to provide information to the public, through construction and start-up of each new facility. Program staff support the new prison as it starts-up and integrates in the community.
The Program:
- Provides on-going information to the public about the department and the new prison.
- Oversees public relations and activities in the community.
- Acquires sites and development easements and manages prison sites prior to construction.
- Oversees pre-construction studies and activities, such as evaluation of wetlands, wildlife, threatened and endangered species, transportation impacts, community impacts, historical and cultural surveys, geotechnical and earthquake hazards. Works with the local community to prepare for the new facility, help to identify partners and resources.
- Develop a Prison Advisory Committee in each jurisdiction and provide on-going information to members about department policies, philosophy, operations, and construction.
- Develop staff recruitment opportunities and partner with the recruitment unit to bring job fairs and job information to the community.
- Work with the community to identify and develop inmate work opportunities and inmate industry partners.
- Assist in identifying and evaluating availability of local services and assist in developing community supported solutions and service agreements, such as services for water, sewer, emergency response, inmate work, and medical services.
