Program Overview
Students interested in Language Education, including Foreign Language and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), have a variety of options at the Curry School of Education. For undergraduates interested in K-12 teaching, we offer our Foreign Language B/MT, a five-year program with a focus on Spanish, French, or German that includes both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree along with licensure and endorsement. For post-graduates similarly interested, we offer our PGMT, a 2-year master’s program. For those interested in working with English Language Learners, we offer an add-on ESOL endorsement, taken in conjunction with licensure studies in Foreign Languages or Elementary Education. (Those interested in Latin Education should contact Dr. Ruth Ferree rf2c@virginia.edu.)
Our M.Ed degree in Foreign Language is offered in conjunction with Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL), where Foreign Language is an emphasis area in the CTL framework.
Finally, Ph.D. studies in Language Education are available through the Language, Literacy, and Cultural Studies (LLCS) graduate unit, where students engage in studies across these disciplines, while concentrating on Language Education.
