The Communication Sciences department is concerned with the processes of human communication and their analysis. The department has two sections: Communication and Communication Disorders.
The Communication program emphasizes the scientific investigation of human communication behavior, stressing developments in communication theory and research as they relate to society and the communication process. We offer an undergraduate major in communication, as well as M.A. and Ph.D. programs in a variety of specializations including advertising, public relations, nonverbal, new communication technology, persuasion, interpersonal, mass, and health communication. These programs prepare students for a variety of jobs in the information society. Graduate programs prepare students to conduct independent research, and to evaluate research on communication processes.
The Communication Disorders program focuses on studying the normal development of speech, language and hearing as well as the understanding and clinical management of disorders in these processes. The undergraduate major in Communication Disorders is a pre-professional program that enables students to apply for graduate studies in either Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology. The Communication Disorders program offers both Au.D. and Ph.D. programs in Audiology, and M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Speech-Language Pathology.
