Tuition Waivers, Graduate Students

Graduate Assistant Tuition Waivers

  • Tuition, but not associated fees, is waived for graduate assistants. The student is still responsible for any fees for the semester. Remember that some programs such as MBA use a "block pricing" format. This means that only part of the total charge will be covered by the waiver.

If you have an assistantship that begins or terminates after the semester starts, the waiver will be prorated. This can result in either a partial tuition assessment (if the student is registered throughout the semester for tuition-bearing course work) or a partial refund (if tuition has been paid).

Additional Waivers

National Guard Waivers

  • Students must complete paperwork with their commanding officer each semester to qualify for this waiver. The National Guard should send individual sealed forms that certify the student will receive the waiver to the Bursar’s Office. If applicable, the Bursar’s Office will ensure that the appropriate regional campus is notified.

Employee Waivers

  • There are two different types of employee waivers depending on the employee bargaining unit (UCPEA and Managerial). Although HR gives UConn employees until October 15 and February 28 to apply (for Fall and Spring, respectively), we strongly urge employees to complete their applications so as to meet the fee bill deadlines (August 1 and January 8) and to avoid late fees. Employees must complete paperwork that is available on the Human Resources website. If approved by HR, it will be forwarded to the Bursar's Office and your fee bill will be credited with the waiver. Please remember that employees receiving these waivers are not allowed to register until the first day of classes. If you desire, you may fax a copy of your application to the Bursar's Office at (860) 486-9236 and we will give you a temporary deferment until we are notified by HR.

Spousal Waivers

  • The student must complete forms on the Human Resources website. If they qualify for a waiver, HR will forward this information to the Bursar’s Office.

Veteran's Waivers

  • The veteran must complete paperwork with the Office of Veterans Affairs (located in the Financial Aid Office) to qualify for the waiver.

Over 62 Waivers

  • This waiver pertains to any person sixty-two years of age or older who has been accepted for admission, provided this person is enrolled in a degree-granting program or, provided, at the end of the regular registration period, there is space available in the course in which the person intends to enroll. Students must notify the Bursar’s Office if they are over 62 years of age and a Connecticut resident. If any person who receives a tuition waiver also receives educational reimbursement from an employer, the waiver is reduced by the amount of the educational reimbursement.

Graduate Assistantships

  • Students offered an assistantship must complete paperwork with their department accepting the assistantship. The department then completes a payroll authorization for the student, which is transferred to the PeopleSoft Graduate Assistant panel. The panel lists the semester, whether the student has an assistantship and if the assistantship includes a full waiver or a partial waiver of tuition.

Reciprocal Agreement Waivers

  • The University of Connecticut participates in the Reciprocal Faculty Dependent Tuition Agreement with two other New England Land Grant Universities, University of Maine at Orono and University of Rhode Island. The program may be accessed by faculty and non-teaching unclassified staff who are half-time or more on the regular payroll. Upon verification by the University, dependent children who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at either the University of Maine at Orono or the University of Rhode Island may be eligible for in-state tuition rates.
