Parent Information

  • The Office of the Bursar’s core function is to produce accurate electronic billing statements and collect student obligations on behalf of the University.

There is no doubt about it: the college experience changes every student. Parents play a critical role in their student’s life as they take that big step into post-secondary education. This new chapter in both your lives is exciting and maybe a little bit scary. We hope to ease some of the anxiety by providing you with information to better understand the policies, procedures and services we provide to your student.

Please be aware of the following policies:
    • The Bursar’s Office is limited as to the student information we may release to parents of our students. We are bound by federal laws which mandate certain privacy rights for students. Under these privacy laws, we may not release a student’s account balance, billing statements, or refund status without documented consent from the student. The University has developed an online waiver to permit students to designate one or more people by assigning each of them a 4-digit access code. Please see FERPA waiver for more information.
    • Students may also authorize parents or other third parties to view and pay their e-bills. Please go to Authorized User for additional information.
    • All refunds of student credit balances, with exception of Plus Loan, will be made to the student.
    • If an undergraduate student’s bill is not paid when it is due, a hold and a $50.00 late fee will be placed on the account. This hold will prevent registration for the next semester, the release of official transcripts and access to the University Recreation Center.
    • Most of our communication with your student will be via his or her university e-mail account (uconn.edu) so you may want to ask your student to share that information with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • FAQ’S for Parents and a few links to areas on our website that best answer some of those questions

    1. 1.       How much is tuition going to cost and when is tuition due?
    2. Tuition rates are typically decided in January of every year for the following years fall, spring and summer semesters. To view the most recent tuition rates go to the current years Tuition and Fees for undergraduate students.

    3. 2. What if I do not receive an E-Bill notification?
    4. Bills must be paid by the due date to avoid late fees even if you or the student does not receive the official E-Bill notification. Students are able to view their account balance online at any time.

    5. 3. Does the University of Connecticut offer a payment plan?
    6. University does offer a deferred payment plan. This payment plan allows students to pay their tuition and fee balance in four equal payments for each major semester. More information is available here at the University of Connecticut Installment Payment Plan

    7. 4. What if I cannot pay on time?
    8. In this economy, a lot of people are having trouble paying their bills. When you are unable to make a bill payment, it usually brings about a lot of stress. When students worry about the hassle that comes from late payments and no payments, they are unable to apply the appropriate focus and attention to their studies.  The key is to contact us immediately when unexpected events occur and let us know what is going on and when you think that you will have the funds. We are here to help in any way we can.

    9. 5. What is a Title IV Waiver?
    10. University charges, other than tuition, fees, and room and board, cannot be paid automatically by federal funds without your son or daughters express authorization. In some cases not creating the Title IV Waiver can result in a refund being disbursed to you or your student when a balance is still owed on the student account. Please encourage your student to consider this when deciding if they want to create the waiver. Additional information is available here.

    11. 6. How are refunds issued for Parent PLUS Loans?
    12. The Financial Aid Office provides parents a “ Parent PLUS Loan Request and Authorization Form” which allows them to select how the University processes any potential PLUS loan refunds. If the parent chooses to allow the refund to be issued to their student, the refund will be treated much like any other student account refund. If the parent elects to personally receive the refund, a refund check will be generated and mailed to the parent’s address.

The Bursar’s Office wishes you a rewarding and successful experience at the University of Connecticut. Our staff looks forward to working with you and your student.
