When: The next “First Thursdays” will happen on February 2 from 12-1

Where: Inside The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY? Learn about storing your publications in Libra, the University’s online repository.  Depositing your articles and other scholarly works in Libra allows you to assure the long-term preservation of your scholarship and enables other scholars and researchers to discover your work.  Hear from Esther Onega, MLS, about Libra’s current functionality, and the future plans to accept theses, dissertations, and even data.  In addition, Ivan Login, MD will provide a faculty perspective on Libra.

Please join us –no reservations necessary– grab a seat, and enjoy this interesting presentation.  Feel free to bring your lunch and we’ll provide dessert!

First Thursdays in the Library Series. During the 2011/12 school year, the Library will continue to offer the series “First Thursdays in the Library”. This year will have a slightly different focus than in the past. We plan to feature our own expertise in the areas of information, technology, or health topics. Our hope is that these topics will be of interest to you and will stimulate thought and discussion.

Library rap video

The Library was the subject of an entertainment marketing class at the McIntire School this semester. The assignment was for students to create a video promoting the Library, then to see if the video would “go viral.”

Nursing Students’ Poster Session

http://blog.hsl.virginia.edu/nursing/2011/11/09/83/nurses1-3/

My colleague and I just returned from a delightful hour spent listening to nursing students discuss their historical nursing posters. Dr. Mary Gibson’s “Introduction to the World of Nursing” class researched various topics, wrote papers and created posters.  Some of the topics that students researched included orthopedic nursing, men in nursing, oncology nursing, pediatric nurse prationers and the image of nurses through time.

Students worked on papers and posters in small teams and provided in depth information on their topics. I asked many of the students what the experience was like for them. The common response was that it was an enjoyable process and they now know a lot more about the topics they have researched.

Thank you Dr. Gibson and NUCO 1200 nursing students for letting us participate in the students’ academic experience.

Look for RefWorks on the left side of the Library’s web page under Databases. If you are a new RefWorks user click on the link to sign-up for a new account.

Lavender Oil and Pain Management

http://blog.hsl.virginia.edu/nursing/2011/09/19/lavendar-oil-and-pain-management/lavendar-4/

Check out the current Natural Standard monograph for information on a recent study that suggests the use of lavender oil aromatherapy may decrease pain intensity and reduce stress. In the study patients receiving lavender oil  aromatherapy were compared to a control group receiving only oxygen. The stress level and pain intensity level of the two groups were compared at baseline and after.

The Natural Standard database consists of systematic reviews of alternative and complementary modalities. Access to the database is available from the Library’s Database collection’s A to Z index.
