SELLA-GRANATA SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Programming for the Sella–Granata Gallery (SGG) falls within two general categories:

  1. General Programming
  2. Graduate Degree Exhibitions (MA, MFA)

The SGG uses a block schedule with specific slots pre-designated for a category. For example, the majority of slots in the fall semester are reserved for general programming, while the spring places emphasis on graduate degree exhibitions. Please refer to the schedule for clarification.

General programming includes exhibitions of outside or visiting artists; juried or curated exhibitions by faculty, graduate students or other members of the community; educational programming related to academic course(s); department programming; special events; performances; other. The intention is to provide cultural enrichment to the UA arts community. Exciting and innovative programming is encouraged!

Graduate Degree Exhibitions provide a formal opportunity for developing artists within the UA graduate studio program to exhibit their work. Two and three person exhibitions are emphasized to broaden the visual conversation. In occasion, faculty may elect to feature the work of a single graduate student, based solely on the physical requirements of the work.

Submission procedures for each category are distinct and require a separate application form.

General Programming Procedures: ( download application)

  1. Download and complete the editable PDF form called “Exhibition / Programming Application.” There is a gallery plan with measurements on page 2 of the application.
  2. Include the required attachments that detail the following:
    1. Artist statement or conceptual/thematic statement about the proposed exhibit
    2. Physical description of the proposed exhibit
    3. Examples of 10-15 works related to this proposal (digital images on cd)
    4. Image inventory list providing title, medium, size, date of example images
  3. On the form, clearly indicate requested dates, including reception. Provide a justification if the timing is critical.
  4. Please include any other pertinent information
  5. Return all required materials in physical, printed form to the SGG mailbox in the Office of the Department of Art and Art History by March 1st. The SGG may consider general program requests submitted outside of this application period—please ask.
  6. While this formal application is required, the SGG committee welcomes informal discussion of projects prior to and during time of submission. Please email: cjordan@as.ua.edu

Graduate Degree Exhibition Procedures: ( download application)

  1. Download and complete the editable PDF form called “Graduate Degree Exhibition Application.” There is a gallery plan with measurements on page 2 of the application.

  4. Please include any other pertinent information
  5. Return all required materials in physical, printed form to the SGG mailbox in the Office of the Department of Art and Art History by March 1st. This is a hard deadline.

Decisions will be made in late spring for the following year.

Woods Hall Gallery Makes Headlines "Woods Hall art gallery named in honor of two professors" Sept. 18, 2009
in the CRIMSON WHITE

“Trustees approve Foster expansion plan; Woods Hall art gallery named in honor of two professors” by Amanda Peterson, Friday, September 18, 2009, excerpt:

…Art gallery named in honor of professors

The honorary degrees and recognition committee voted to rename Room 109 in Woods Hall in honor of two long-time UA art professors.

The Sella-Granata Art Gallery, which will house student work, honors the late Professor Alvin Sella, who died in 2013, and the late Professor Angelo Granata, who died in 2008.

Between the two professors, they had almost 80 years of teaching experience, said Pam Parker, vice president for advancement.

Parker said the two professors were beloved by their students. Granata retired in 1998 but continued to sculpt and show his work until his death. Sella continued to teach until 2011.
