The highlight of David Didier’s summer internship with Conserv FS was walking out on the grass at Wrigley Field.
Didier interned as a Turf Sales Associate with Conserv FS in Wauconda, Ill.
“Typically I go home during the summer to assist with our family’s farming operation,” Didier said. “Not working on the farm took a little getting used to, but the new experience was worth it.”
As a turf sales associate, Didier was responsible for finding potential customers for the company. He found hundreds of potential clients, mailed postcards to all of them and helped write price quotes and application recommendation letters.
After he graduates, Didier plans on going into sales. During his internship, he worked with many salesmen and learned that each one had different salesmanship techniques.
“What works for one salesman might not work for another. To be successful in sales you have to be trustworthy, honest and most of all, yourself,” he said.
The crop science and soils classes that Didier took at U of I were “instrumental” in preparing him to sell chemicals and fertilizers.
The internship was a unique experience for Didier because his family has purchased products from Conserv FS for many years.
“It was interesting to be on the other side of the table,” he said.
He originally found out about the internship during an IAA scholarship luncheon that was held at the Illinois Farm Bureau/GROWMARK headquarters.
In the fall, he inquired about internship positions with the GROWMARK representative at the ACES Career Fair. After meeting with the representative, Didier had an interview and GROWMARK paired him up with an internship in the turf department at Conserv FS.
Didier highly recommends this internship.
“The people of GROWMARK and Conserv FS are top notch,” he said. “They always make me feel welcome and were great to work with.”
